About Us

Mbagathi Hospital strives to offer quality and affordable healthcare services to the greater Nairobi County.

Our History

Mbagathi Hospital was originally known as Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) under the then King George VI Hospital, currently Kenyatta National Hospital.

The hospital was built in the 1950s to cater for infectious diseases which required isolation such as Tuberculosis, Measles, Meningitis and Leprosy.

In the year 1995, IDH was curved from Kenyatta National Hospital and transformed into an autonomous District Hospital for Nairobi City albeit with minimal facilities and a skeleton staff.

Since then, Mbagathi Hospital has grown to offer healthcare services comparable to any other district hospital in the country.

Mbagathi Hospital is the only District Hospital within Nairobi County with the largest catchment area of about one million people, comprising mainly of the underprivileged.

The main hospital facility is located in Kenyatta/Golf Course, Dagoretti Division of Nairobi West District. It borders the Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenyatta City Council Market, Forces Memorial Hospital, the Kenya medical Research Institute and the Kibera slums.

It is the only public health facility within Nairobi that the Ministry of Health relies on to decongest the Kenyatta National Hospital which is mandated to handle referral cases.

Mbagathi County Hospital is also an Approved Internship Training Center certified by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.

Mbagathi Hospital offers free medical services to vulnerable members of the community such as homeless persons and street families and victims of domestic violence.

The hospital’s Public Health department deals with disease surveillance and community outreach.

Our Mandate

Providing promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative health services whilst ensuring accessibility and affordability.

Universal Health Care

Together with other United Nations member states, Kenya is working toward worldwide universal health coverage by the year 2030. According to the World Health Organization, Universal Health Coverage/Care (UHC) is defined as ‘the ability for persons to receive the health services they need without suffering financial hardship’.

Universal Health Coverage is more than just eliminating the out-of-pocket expenditure; it is also about ensuring access to quality health care.

As Kenya continues making strides towards promoting UHC, Mbagathi County Hospital is at the forefront of ensuring the success of the program.

The provisions of the Bill of Rights, especially the right to life and the right to the highest attainable standard of health, including reproductive health and emergency treatment, have raised the expectations of Kenyans regarding healthcare.

It is through this that the goal of Mbagathi County Hospital is to provide Equitable, Affordable and Quality healthcare to ALL citizens.

Mbagathi serves over one thousand patients on a daily basis with our special clinics such as the Comprehensive Care Clinic serving over two thousand HIV patients at any one time.
